Retaining Wall Installation
New walls for slopes, level yards and new builds.

Richmond metro and the Tri-Cities
Richmond Retaining Wall Contractors builds, installs, repairs and replaces residential and commercial retaining walls across Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover and the Tri-Cities. Whether a slope is eating into your yard, a driveway needs support, an old timber wall is rotting or a new home needs level ground, we build the wall around what the site actually has to hold instead of repeating the same failure with new block.
Long-term performance starts behind and below the face you see. We plan excavation, base depth, drainage stone, filter fabric, outlets, reinforcement and wall height around the ground on your lot, which changes across the Fall Line from Piedmont clay in Short Pump to Coastal Plain sand in Sandston. That lets us correct drainage and weak soil before the first block is set, and tell you honestly when a repair will last and when replacement makes more sense.
Tell us the basics and we will come back with a real range.

We are a retaining wall contractor working across the Richmond metro and the Tri-Cities. Walls are what we do, rather than one line on a landscaping menu, and that focus is why we can tell you which side of the Fall Line your property sits on and what it means for your build.
Most wall failures in this region trace back to a few things. Water that had nowhere to go, and a base that was never built to carry what was put on it. Both are invisible in a finished wall, which is why a cheaper quote is sometimes cheaper for reasons you will not discover for a decade.
We work on residential, commercial and multifamily property from Goochland in the west to Prince George in the south. We are equally happy telling you that your wall needs a $600 drainage fix rather than the replacement you called about.
Most calls we take start here: a new wall for a sloped yard, a wall that is leaning or bulging, or water that has nowhere to go. For more than a decade we have installed, repaired and replaced retaining walls for homeowners, builders and HOAs across Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield. Every job starts with the same questions about height, soil, drainage and what sits above the wall.

New walls for slopes, level yards and new builds.

Leaning, bulging or settling walls, plus cleaning and sealing.

Removal and rebuild, including old timber and tie walls.

Drainage and waterproofing behind the wall.

Written diagnosis for buyers, sellers, owners and HOAs.

Collapsed or moving walls. Stabilize first, then rebuild.
The right material depends on the load, the space behind the wall and the look of the property. We build segmental block for most subdivision and backyard walls, poured and precast concrete where loads are heavy or space is tight, and natural stone or brick where a wall has to match an older home. Taller walls in any material need reinforcement or engineering, and we tell you which before we quote.

Segmental block walls, gravity and reinforced.

Poured, precast and large block concrete walls.

Natural stone, boulder, gabion and brick walls.
Homeowners across the metro use retaining walls to turn slopes into usable yards, hold up driveways, level patios and pools, and protect basement entrances. We have built these walls on steep Bon Air lots, in walkout subdivisions in Midlothian and Short Pump, and on older Tuckahoe properties. Access, drainage and anything planned above the wall shape every design.

Hillsides and tiered terraces turned into usable ground.

Walls designed for the weight of every car above.

Level yards, garden beds and fences on walls.

Patio walls, raised paver patios and seat walls.

Level pool sites and decks that never move.

Dry, stable basement entrances.

Block, stone and paver steps with even risers.
Property managers, developers, builders and community associations need walls built to stamped plans and scheduled around a working site. We build commercial, parking lot, HOA and new construction walls from Bellwood and Chester to the Route 288 corridor. Walls under vehicle traffic or near structures need engineering at any height, and we price it separately.

Commercial sites and parking lots, engineered and phased.

Community walls planned across budget years.

Priced from grading plans, on the build schedule.

Licensed design through final inspection.
Most wall and drainage problems start in the ground, so we do our own excavation, grading and drainage work. Homeowners and builders across Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield call us for standing water, eroding slopes, settled backfill and new building pads. Because the same crews handle the digging, the drainage and the wall, all three are planned together.

Excavation, slope cutting and soil haul-off.

Grades that move water away from your home.

Yard drainage and French drains, source first.

Water first, then the right method for the slope.

Richmond is one of the few metros in the country where the ground changes fundamentally inside the city limits. Understanding that is most of what separates a wall that lasts from one that does not.
Walls are priced by face area rather than by length, because a wall twice as tall does much more than twice the work. Here is roughly where projects land in this metro.
| Project | Typical size | Planning range |
|---|---|---|
| Garden or raised bed wall | 25 ft, 2 ft exposed | $1,500 – $2,900 |
| Rear yard wall, moderate slope | 40 ft, 4 ft exposed | $4,800 – $11,000 |
| Walkout basement walls | 60 ft total, 4–7 ft | $11,000 – $24,000 |
| Tiered wall on a steep lot | Two tiers, 70 ft combined | $13,000 – $33,000 |
| Failing wall replacement | 40 ft, 4 ft exposed | $7,200 – $17,000 |
Planning ranges based on published 2026 national cost averages for comparable work (HomeGuide, HomeAdvisor), not quotes. The full cost guide breaks these down by material and by what drives each number. Last reviewed: September 2026.
Enter your dimensions for a planning range. This is arithmetic, not a quote, and it cannot see your lot.
Every project follows the same sequence, adjusted for your locality and your ground. Most of a retaining wall sits below the ground and behind the face, so the steps you never see get the most attention.
We walk the slope, measure the grade change, check the access route and look at where water is already going.
Height, soil regime, room behind the face and loading above the wall give us the system. You choose appearance from the options that actually work.
Confirmed with your building office, shown as separate line items, never buried in a lump sum.
Virginia 811 notice before excavation. Within two feet of a mark we hand dig, and we ask you about private lines that 811 does not mark.
Unsuitable material out, compacted aggregate base in. Invisible in the finished wall, and decisive for its life.
Courses to the system's specification, aggregate zone, filter separation, perforated pipe and an outlet that actually daylights.
Virginia sets the baseline rules, and nine separate authorities administer them across our service area. Walls over three feet, or with a driveway or structure above them, usually need a permit. We confirm which office covers your property before we design.
Full detail by jurisdiction is on our permits and requirements page. We verify current numbers with the office for your address rather than repeating figures from a website.
We work across 23 communities and nine permitting jurisdictions, from Piedmont clay in the west to Coastal Plain sand in the east, plus the City of Richmond itself.
Rural Powhatan and Goochland add their own variable: long driveways, rural acreage and rock in the excavation change the job considerably out there. If your community is not listed, call us anyway. We almost certainly work there.
The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code does not require a permit application for retaining walls supporting less than three feet of unbalanced fill. The exemption does not apply where the wall supports a surcharge other than ordinary unbalanced fill, which covers driveways, parking areas and structures above the wall.
Nationally, most retaining wall projects cost about $3,200 to $9,200, averaging around $6,000, and complete walls typically run $35 to $65 per square foot of face area. Taller, engineered or hard-to-reach walls cost more. Height, access, ground conditions and drainage outlet distance move it most. Our Richmond cost guide breaks it down by material and project type.
Block, stone, poured concrete and large block systems all outlast the people who commission them, provided the base and drainage are right. Timber does not.
Almost always water or the base. Water behind a wall is enormously heavy and few residential walls are built to hold it, so a blocked or missing drainage outlet is the most common cause we find.
Quotes for new work are free. A diagnostic assessment on a failing wall is a separate service because it involves investigation rather than measurement.
The Richmond metro and the Tri-Cities. Richmond city, Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover counties, the independent cities of Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights, the towns of Ashland, and Prince George, Powhatan and Goochland counties.
It depends on the season, the permit path and whether your neighborhood requires architectural approval. We give you a realistic date range rather than a date we cannot hold.
