Protecting Lawns, Driveways, Trees & Adjacent Structures

- Lawns. Ground mats along the route; ruts regraded and seeded.
- Driveways. Plywood or mats under tracks; edges protected from cracking.

Trench safety matters on deeper work. Federal OSHA rules require protective systems such as sloping, shoring or trench boxes for trenches five feet deep or more, unless the trench is in stable rock. We plan for that before digging rather than improvising once the trench is open.
Utility Locating, Permits & Land Disturbance Requirements in Richmond, VA
Excavation is regulated for both safety and erosion, and a few rules apply on almost every job. Virginia 811 must be notified before any digging, and larger areas trigger land disturbance permits. We handle the notices and permits so you don't have to track them.
- Virginia 811. Virginia 811 notice is required before any excavation. The marking period runs to 7:00 AM on the third working day after notice, and digging within two feet of a mark is done by hand. Private lines to sheds, lights, irrigation and pumps are not marked and have to be identified with the owner.
- Land disturbance. Virginia regulates land-disturbing activity at 10,000 square feet generally and at 2,500 square feet in Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas, and localities can set lower thresholds.
- Building permits. Footings for additions, garages and decks fall under the building permit for that structure.
